Full Membership may be sought by any individual who is currently occupying a responsible position and who is committed to a productive research career by his/her recent investigations in the field of reproductive biology. While a minimum of two (2) years should have been spent in this research career, there is no requirement that the nominee should have worked at his/her current institution for two (2) years. Eligible individuals must be nominated.

 

All applications for membership shall be made in writing and shall be accompanied by a sponsor letter signed by one (1) active member in good standing of the Society. The sponsoring member letter should describe activities related to the nominee's qualifications for membership.

 

The application, the sponsor letter, and Curriculum Vitae may be e-mailed or mailed to Stephanie Ponta in the SGI National Office in Washington, DC, before the stated deadline on the application form.  The SGI mailing address and e-mail address can be found on the Application for Membership.

 

Upon election to membership the newly elected member and sponsoring member will be notified of the fact of his/her election. A nominee who is not recommended by the Council may be re-nominated for membership. No individual who is nominated for membership (3) times, and who is not elected to membership, shall thereafter be eligible for further nomination for membership in the Society.

Emeritus Membership status is granted to full members upon request at his/her sixty-fifth birthday or official retirement. The member may elect to stay active for as long as he/she wishes. Once a member elects emeritus status, he/she shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges of the Society, but will not have to pay annual dues and will not be asked to vote.

Honorary Membership in the SGI is awarded to an individual who has achieved recognition for scientific contributions of an original nature in reproductive biology in which he/she has personally actively participated. Moreover, this person should have demonstrated by past performance and future objectives that this interest in reproductive biology is dynamic. The individual need not necessarily occupy a position in an institution of higher learning, nor necessarily function in a medical or paramedical area. Honorary Members shall enjoy all of the rights and privileges of other members of the Society, except that they shall not be required to pay any dues or assessments which may be imposed by these By-Laws, or by action of the Council as provided for herein, nor shall Honorary Members be entitled to vote at any regular or special meetings of members, nor to hold any elective or appointive office in the Society.

The In Training category is for individuals embarking on a research career in women’s health and reproductive science. In Training applicants must be either a full-time postdoctoral trainee, clinical resident/fellow or full-time student enrolled in a formal training program leading to a degree (BA, BS, MD, PhD, MS, MPH) who does not currently hold or has not held a faculty position or equivalent.  If elected, the In Training membership will remain in effect until training is completed at which time application for full membership will be encouraged and expected.

 

In Training members will be nominated by a member in good standing who will state when the applicant is expected to complete training.

 

The application, the sponsor letter, and Curriculum Vitae may be e-mailed or mailed to the SGI National Office in Washington, DC, before the stated deadline on the application form.

 

The application will be reviewed by the membership committee and recommendation made to Council. The In Training member will pay nominal dues sufficient to cover administrative costs, may participate in all activities of the Society and subscribe to the Society’s journal if desired but may not sponsor abstracts or vote. The maximum length of time an individual may stay in the In Training category is eight (8) years. Requests for extension beyond this limit until completion of training will be considered on an individual basis by the Membership Committee.

Inactive Membership status may be requested by a member at any age due to ill-health, financial difficulty or early retirement. An inactive member will not have to pay dues and will not participate in the activities of the Society. The request for change from active to inactive status and possibility of a return to active status will require approval of the President and/or Council.
